Once upon a time, there was a man who lived with his wife and dog. One day, the man went to the store and accidentally locked them both in the garage for 3 hours. When he returned, he realized his mistake and let them out. Although he apologized profusely, his wife was furious and screamed and shouted at the man. She was so upset that the rest of her day was ruined as she fumed about the incident. When he let the dog out, however, the dog rushed to him in joy, wagged his tail vigorously and smothered him with doggie kisses.
Even though the wife and the dog were in the same situation, they reacted quite differently to it. The wife was angry and continued to be upset for the rest of the day because she was focused on the few hours in which she was locked in the garage. The dog, on the other hand, was happy because his owner was home and let him out. The moral of the story is that, although you can’t control the challenges life throws at us, you can choose how you react to them.
How often does one thing happen that ruins your entire day? Your day can only be ruined by a single event if you allow it to. This month’s theme, positive outlook, is about more than just being excited about what you’re doing or what’s to come. It’s about focusing on the positive elements in life rather than dwelling on the negative.

Although dogs are the most varied species on the planet, from working dogs to lap dogs, they all share a common positive outlook on life. Of the great variety of dogs, I believe the type that best exemplifies this month’s theme, positive outlook, is the Labrador Retriever.
No matter what they’re doing, they’re excited about it. “A stick! My favorite thing in the world! A toy, alright! I love toys! We’re going on a walk! I love walks! Dinner! My favorite thing ever!” Dogs seem to have the expectation that regardless of what they’re going to be doing, it’s going to be an incredibly good time!
Do you see this world a wonderful place filled with incredible opportunities or do you view it as a gloomy place filled with hardship and despair? Your expectation of what the world has to offer tends to be a self-fulfilling prophecy based on how your perspective. It has been demonstrated that the same event can happen to different people and can be experienced and described in vastly different ways because of their varying attitudes toward them.
As Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, once put it:
“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t–you’re right.”
